Bill;
This started as a 5X5 Square Cube. Cut two Diagonia corners off for a flat surface and mounted between centers as close to center as I could get. Cut the tenon and foot and shaped the outside while between centers. Left a small tenon with the center mark on the larger tenon so I could find center when mounting to finish bottom. Then I reversed it in a chuck held by the tenon and shaped the inside. I then sanded what I could on the lathe. I revesed it again on a jam chuck, finished the bottom and cut off the tenon. Then sanded off the nub. I hope this helps. I have to give the credit for this Tom Crab, who is a very talented turner living in Richmond, VA who was willing to share his knowledge and technique. I learned a lot from this and I am willing to pass along what he showed me. I look forward to seeing your results.
You did a great job. I like your open design. I think I would go with danish oil on this one and build it up pretty good before buffing. I did one of these for a C&T way back. Here's the link: http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=1868
Same but different. Not sure that I don't like your's better. I better go try it again sometime soon. 8-)
Rev - Thanks for the comments. I liked yours as well. I think the Plum may have been a little easier than the oak. I think you are right on the Danish Oil and I am going with your recommmendation.
Bill - Good Luck with yours and I'm sure it will turn out Great!
Look forward to seeing one of these from the both of you in the near future! :-)
