I had a scrap of wood that a friend gave me a while back, and had not tried a square bowl,so figured what the heck. I had no idea how to go about it, so I just made it square on my tablesaw, mounted it and turned it leaving the edges square. If someone has a better way let me know. It is 5 x 1.75. My wife was not impressed, but the kids like it.
This is a heck of a first try. I think there was a and instruction segment here on turning a square bowl but I am not sure. I think I will check it out. By the way Nappan, I have been at this for at least three or four years and I have yet to try it.
Thanks for the link. I think there was a similiar article in woodturning. I did this one like a normal bowl. Screw chuck and turn the bottom leaving a tenon, then turn it around, holding it with compression jaws. The tough part was rechucking to do the bottom. My cole jaws were only marginally successful and I ended up doing a lot of hand sanding of the bottom when I was done.
