This is a Cypress bowl that has several new to me experience's new Thompson bowl gauge, first time using a chuck new nova g3, finished with a Beal bowl buffing system
The bowl is 5" 1/2 by 1"1/2 and is finished with Mylands and Carnauba wax.
Something else new to me as I was putting finish on a crack developed and now how do I make that a design feature? So I put a leaf and bead on with CA to either embellish or hide the crack.
Please comment and advise. Tom
Nicely done, and nice touch on the "embelishment". That crack probably developed as a result of friction. Some wood fibers just can't take the heat. Happens to the best of us.
Nice classic, clean lines - well done. My favorite fix for checks and voids is crushed turquoise and CA glue. When folks ask how I got the turquoise in there I tell them "You have to carve the stone so it exactly fits the groove." (when they look at me like I'm nuts I tell the truth)
Mark I was to far into it and I also had some other problems to try and fix. As I stated first time using a chuck and the bottom is the worst of it. But I learned how to take care of that the next time. I thought about things for a while then talked to my wife and between us we came up with the leaf and wire and bead. I just felt that the lines and look were to good to give up on and wanted to have something to send along in time. I had been told by some turners at the wood craft store that sometimes you don't need to try and hide the cracks and to make them part of the piece and make it look as good as you can. Don't like to give up easily and that way I might learn something.
bubba great job. I like the design and the leaf adds to it. I usually fill cracks and voids with saw dust, chalk, crushed stone, etc and CA glue. I think if you find the right combination in color it really adds to the work.
