Holly and Oak dyed black, Amboyna burl with blackwood rim. Finish is mat lacquer for box and buffed lacquer for hollow form. Sometimes when life seem very thorny, you have to look for the peace at the center.
This is by far the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. I have admired your work for some time and this piece fits well with all the other "Top Drawer" turnings you have done. Way,way cool.
Thanks guys. Just an added note. Each spine is made up of two pieces. The longer outside one has a 1/8" tenon and the inside one has a 1/8" hole. This locks them onto the ball. Gary.
All of the above. Its great to see something beautifully different now and then. And the patience and time it must have taken to turn those mortice and tenons on the spikes should not be lost on us, nor the attention to detail on the rest. Congrats!
