It starts off with a tenon on the top end and the bulk of the body is shaped and the inside hollowed. Then it's parted off and I use the tenon end as a plug and tenon (glued)to hold the piece while the top is finished. Then the last inch or so from the top is drilled out. You have to look to tell that it's been plugged. I've been asked how I managed to hollow it out through the tiny hole in the top. Of course it's "magic".
Thanks for the comments. As for the shine, it hasn't been buffed or waxed. It's just several coats of wipe-on poly finish. After picture taking I sometimes also put on a thin coat of conservator's wax to protect from fingerprints etc.
