This is a really nice, wide, squat box. As to the wood, it could be what is called "Comino." in this part of the world. Comino sometimes yields a red stripe and the grain can be similar. Go to the "Goblets Challenge" photos of last April and look at my goblet. Can't see the grain much, but note the red stripes on bowl and base.
