This is a birdhouse I turned for my entry in this year's birdhouse competition at the Ogden Nature Center. It was turned from some walnut logs that were cracked before turning and cracked a little more after. It's two pieces with the bottom glued into the top and a walnut perch also. The opening for the door is 1 5/8". After I had it done I had several suggestions including making the bottom removable from the top for cleaning. And I learned that different birds prefer a different sized opening. So I'm not sure if it will actually attract a bird family at all. It's 2 feet tall and 1 foot across the eaves. Because it's supposed to hang outside from Earth Day until Labor Day I finished it with Thompson water seal and then sprayed it with Helmsman Spar varnish over that. Next year's entry will be an "improved" model with a little more birdhouse research incorporated.
If I were a bird, I would move in it right now. And have all the female birds lined up waiting....
Sorry, got carried away. Very cool looking piece. I like the way it looks like it has been there a while.
Well, those folks at the competition don't know what super turning is all about. It should have won this year! Beautiful job. Its definitely "for the birds" (in a positive way...).
