Those Aussie burls; I can't get enough of them.
This compote was turned from Red Mallee Burl, a native of Australia. It's composed of 3 different parts: bowl, spindle, and base.
The inside bowl and spindle are friction polished and the base and bowl edges are finished with BLO. Wanted to get that dramatic look on the inner bowl versus the outer edge. Comments are always welcomed.
DImensions: 6.5" tall x 5"-8" wide.
Leo, Wow and wow again! Beautiful work with a beautiful piece of burl. Where does one buy such wood? Did you have trouble deciding what to do with such a blank or did it decide for you. Congrats!
I have not seen anything you have done yet that I don?t like. But this is what I would call rare. I?m sure the wood cost quite a bit. And then add the time. This is truly a Gallery piece.
You guys/gals are the best. I'm gonna put all of you in my next commercial. Thanks for the kind words.
TONI, these are burls from YOUR native land. You need to get us all hooked up on the burls from Australia. Then we could all afford to turn this stuff!
Leo, do you mind telling us how much this piece of burl cost? I'm very curious. You obviously did a very good job, but I think you could mess up and the characteristics of the wood could make up for it.
Actually, the wood came from a WR member. His name is Lee Tannenbaum and the website is www.leetreewoodworks.com. It wasn't very expensive, in my opinion. He's got a big supply of Aussie burls. Tell him I sent you.
