Great form on this one Keith. Although, I don't know about having the join lower, I like it where it is. Maybe that's why mine don't sell for hundreds of dollars a piece though...
I really like this box too, but I see what Raffan means. Maybe thats why it hasn't sold. There were actually two boxes I showed Raffan. I am going to gloat now. This is the one I thought he would like. The other was maple burl. He liked it and even said he would have know problem putting his name on it and selling it. My wife had to hold me down so I didn't hid my head when I floated out of the room. That box is no longer for sale.
I like this too, what was the size of the original blank. I know that is a wierd question, but something about the grain match makes it look bigger than it is. I like the join, and the beveling looks very nice.
Rick, I met Raffan at the Utah Symposium last year. I got lucky and wound up walking to the Instant Gallery with him. We had a nice conversation on the way and once there I some how got up the guts to ask him to look at the boxes I had in the gallery.
Phil, the finial isn't meant to be used to open the box if that's what your thinking. I fact when the humidity is high and the fit gets tight you can't grip the finial good enough too open the box.
nappen, The size of the blank isn't that much bigger than the finished piece. I rough my boxes from green wood, dry them, and then return. Most of the size loss is on the top and bottom due tenons that are turned away, and that is only a 1/4" OR SO.
