Jim, you've got a great piece here. Just my opinion, but I don't care for the texturing on this piece. The ambrosia and spalting and blue stain all are wonderful and give loads of character. The texture work is not over bearing, but just doesn't add to the piece in my opinion. I'm sure it will sell quickly though. Again, proving there is a buyer for every piece. It becomes our job to get the two together. 8)
I'm going to differ on Rev's texture opinion. This close up shot shows what the texture looks like but the texture isn't really intended to be seen through a magnifying glass. Because this is such a huge platter it would look pretty plain without something to break up the woodgrain. I think the texture really adds to it.
Like I said, different strokes ... I do respect and understand what you've said Curt. And, like you are implying, it may be different in the hand than in this close up pic. I would love to see it in person. Then again, I say that about most pieces. No bad feelings here. 8)
I think the stipple pattern looks great. I use my texturing tool on nearly every piece I have with a wide flat rim. I will switch between this one an the one created by canting the wheel counterclockwise just a bit, depending on the wood. This piece needed stippling to avoid tearing the colorful detail while a plain piece of walnut or something doesn't have so much contrast to work with. This is a beautiful piece.
