This is a box elder piece which measures about 12 inches tall. It was hollowed from both the top and bottom and then the bottom was plugged. Dyed with aniline dye. I'm tempted to name it "Aardvark"
It goes pretty well with Gary's bed extension. Very nice work. You just keep cranking them out. I know you've talked about your dye and finish process before, but just how long does it take you to finish one of these? 8)
Thanks for the comments. The finishing doesn't take all that long in total time. The dye is applied, and then if the piece fits in the microwave, I usually give it two or three 30second sessions to mostly dry it. Let it air dry overnight and then start applying finish --in this case Minwax wipe-on poly. It could take 6-10 coats or so depending on how much the wood soaks it up. But I can usually apply 3 coats in a day. Applications take maybe 5 minutes.
After that, I sometimes apply a very thin coat of conservator's microcrystalline wax.
