This was turned for the AAW Fall contest and I managed to win with it. Had lots of fun turning the inside-out part of the Blackwood finial. I had thought of doing one like that for a while, since I couldn't remember seeing one before. It took me a few tries to get it right ;-).
I saw this for the first time yesterday on the AAW site and was stunned. The turning itself is outstanding but the finial is one of the most elegant designs I've ever seen. Ornate, yet subtle and delicate. I love the color contrasts of the woods. The balance of the Blackwood foot, rim, and finial is perfect for the Birch.
For those of you with image zoom capability in your browser it is worth the trip. I'd love to see a 'how to' on the hollowed finial bead.
To give a complete critique, I would have to repeat, or otherwise paraphrase, among other things, all that N_Addy said above, as I agree with every elegantly put word. Suffice it to say then, that elegance is the word that captures my feeling about this piece. Very well done. AAW first place certainly deserved.
