Ever noticed that when people start finding out that you make things from wood they start giving you wood? My wife's cousin told me that she had a couple pieces of "some kind of wood" that had been in her basement for years. She lives in her parents old house and her dad did a little woodworking years ago. Her dad has been dead for about 20 years and was sick for several years prior to that. When I went into the basement to see what she had it was two rough sawn planks about 8' x 13" x 1" with some bark along one side. It was so dusty I couldn't tell for sure what kind but thought it was probably walnut. There were a couple short cracks in the ends but other than that it was flat, not warped. I've never worked with wood this thin but decided to try a platter. This is the result....12" x 3/4" platter.
It sure turned out nice. Bet it was pretty hard after sitting that long. Nice that you wee abot to save the sap wood on it. Really gives the piece some nice character. Way to go. BTW, you going to put it in for the calendar? 8)
