Gary, I admit that I'm not the greatest fan of finials in general. So, my question is simply to understand them better. Would this one not look better with this HF if it were a bit thinner? In fact, if the idea is to flow with the turning that it tops, wouldn't it be better as a knob, stopping with the bottom sphere?
The piece is beautiful. Wood and design are great, holding loads of interest for the viewer.
I'm just trying to understand the finial form, the reasoning for the particular design, etc. Chris has tried to help me with this. I've read Droza's article. It gave me a good bit of insight, but not enough to get over the hump. Looking forward to seeing what you have to say on the subject. 8)
Rev, I think your right. When I block out the top of the finial, leaving just the ball, I like it better. As you can see I have been practicing finial forms, maybe it's time to concentrate on the ovedrall piece. Thanks
Gary, your work always blows me away. And this one is no exception. But the first thing that caught my eye was the two different shapes in the vessel and the finial. The vessel has that broad shouldered/small base shape to it while the finial has two seperate perfectly round balls. I wonder if repeating the vessel shape in the finial would make it flow better.
