I used a black fleece background. It's cloth I got at JoAnn fabrics (a store that sells fabrics for sewing and crafts). My lights are GE Reveal lights. They cut out the yellow light, I guess. I have white posterboard walls on the sides to help reflect the light to the sides of the piece. The camera is a Sony Cybershot with 6megapixels.
The upper part of the bowl looks very nice, and I'm sure the lower part does too. But the photo fades into the black background on the lower section and makes it hard to see the shape. That's my critique, for what it's worth, but I don't know anything about photography or how to correct it.
Good lookin' bowl. Nice shape and finish, interesting spalting pattern.
As for the picture - I like the way the bowl seems suspended in space with no visible means of support, but I have to agree with Curt about the bottom of the bowl. It would also be nice if you could get away from the reflective spots on the bowl.
The bowl is fantastic. Great shape and the wood is beautiful.
The black background really makes the wood pop in the lighted areas but the shadow on the bottom left does cause a fade away effect. It would be interesting to see it on a light background.
BTW, I've had good luck with compact fluorescent bulbs (18 watt, 5100K) for eliminating yellow. You can find 'em on Amazon or lightbulbsdirect.com. Most of the pics in my gallery were taken with these bulbs in a cheapo 8-1/2" Home Depot reflector.
