All done and still in one piece!!Cherry, Mohagany,Bloodwood and Maple
30" tall, 13 1/2" widest diameter. 33 rings (counting the decorative bands as 1 each) Total of 2073 pieces and 145 hours of labor. 10 coats of automotive lacquer, final coat micro meshed, polishing compound, and Maquires carnuba wax.
I had a few casualties along the way too. I cracked 2 faceplates (making mental note that aluminum is not strong enough for large pieces!). I also had a bad catch while scraping ...in the last stages of course....that snapped my french curve tool rest off at the 1" shaft!! I couldnt believe it!! I stopped the lathe with my eyes covered by my hands. Peeking thru my hands I saw nothing but a small nick that turned right out!!
My wife is kinda glad Im finally finished too. Too many nights out in the shop and yellow glue stains on my finger tips!!
All I gotta say, sky, is that you will have "urned" you selling price. I don't even begin to have the skill, let alone the patience, to do this kind of thing.
my table saw is a ridgid, with homemade miter sled..........price..........hmmmmmm....havent really though about it, but just to pay for my time would be about $4500.
Wanna buy it??? Discount for WR members!! $1000 off!!!
I sand one side of the completed ring and glue it to the previous ring (mounted on lathe) after glue dries then true the face and start over. As far as sanding the miter joints, no , the table saw does a fine job of cutting smooth and true
I went back and looked at your turnings, you have some of the best on this web site. The thing I like most is the fridge in your shop with the beer tap in the door. You are a very good woodworker, it shows in your work, Alot of people can make bowls and pens but not many can do what you are doing. Do you have a computer program or just graph paper.
Very nice, Jeff. This is a beautiful piece. Your abilities are "sky"rocketing. I wouldn't back off that $4500 tag. Worth every bit of that if not more. You done good. 8)
