My most recent inside/out turning, of Black Cherry. Cut from a solid chunk of wood, sliced into four segments on a bandsaw with a brand new blade using a ripfence, and glued back together as it was cut for the final turning.
The tips were wider than the outermost parts before carving to shape.
Partly finished with two coats of wipe-on polyurethane, I wanted to keep the gloss down for the picture.
6" high, and 4" maximum diameter.
A better photo for printing is available, just in case ;-) And this has a bit of a lean which I would straighten out.
Ken, this one is very well done, and looks like it would be mighty touchy to turn. Do the top pieces tend to fly outward (as in developed lift) as lathe speed increases?
Gil, the petals are quite stiff on the finished piece, and anyway I turn the upper half before proceeding below so I have no problem with flexing. I suppose if I cranked up the speed enough, the lathe might fly out the door or at least blow the shavings the other way but I haven't done any experiments in that direction.
Some of the guys in our club like to kid me about making egg beaters, while twirling one of these bottom up between their fingers.
