This piece of wood came from a tree that was blown down in one of the hurricanes that hit Florida, Pensacola area, in 2005. It was given to me by a turning friend whose father-in-law brought an entire pickup load to him this spring. He said it's Live Oak but I'm not sure what Live Oak is. It turned nice even though I had allowed it to crack a little before I got to it. I especially liked the way the grayish-green lichens stayed with the bark. It's 10" diameter.
That's a beauty, Curt. I really like the grain and color in the wood, and yes, the lichens do add a nice touch. You must have had a great touch too, to keep them in place.
Thanks everyone.
The finish is deft gloss lacquer but it has a little too much shine. I'm goin to either buff it down or hit it with a coat of semi-gloss. I saturated the bark and lichens with CA to hold them in place.
