This lidded box is from Apricot, the lid/finial is chechen rosewood. The box is 5.5" x 3", the lid opening is 1.25" and 5" tall. The dark line in the front of the box is actually a crack/void that was in the wood. It's hollowed to about 3/8" and finished with Deft semigloss lacquer. The top of the lid was supposed to be a spade shape but I botched it and in became a small cup. Tallest and skinniest lid for me so far.
Now we know where you've been hiding Curt...practicing in your shop! nice work, great colors. I would have liked to have see the spade at the top or some other variation to take a bit of the straightness out of the upper 1/2 of the finial, but heck this is a really nice piece, keep it up!
Chris this was inspired by the work of John M. Russell from Linden Virginia. He was at the Utah Arts Festival. He had a lot of beautiful things but his long, thin box lids blew me away. I know what you mean about the straightness. I was very nervous with it as thin as it is but should have continued with a little more taper. It was a bummer when the tip chipped away too.
Curt, here's a tip for you (no pun intended)...when turning the finials, start at the tip and work your way down an inch at a time, removing only as much material from the bulk as you need to do the shape you want. This way, much like a goblet, you have more stability and if the tip breaks you have enough material behind it to do it again, just as a tad bit shorter finial. It saves alot of frustration and heartache to be able to redo the tip if necessary...DAMHIKT
I love the form of this piece and I like the elongated finial but I do think it would be better without the little ball on the tip. But I think this is a pretty piece.
