This is the biggest bowl I've turned so far, about 12.5" x 2.5". It's from a piece of a cottonwood tree I helped cut down that has been standing dead for a few years. I think a lot of the color in the wood is from water stains. It was very dry but good solid wood and being dry didn't fuzz up as bad as green cottonwood. I also tried a new finish on it. It's Rustoleum High Gloss Lacquer. Goes on pretty nice, a lot thicker than Deft.
Wow.. that's unbelievable grain. Last time I turned cotton wood the experience wasn't so good...neither was the smell. I should have some dry somewhere.
