This was a chuck of some gorgeous "ambrosia'd" box elder that I got from Steve (hillbillyred) the night of the WR demo at Phil's house. Thanks Steve!!! 2 15/16" tall x 2 3/8" dia, finished with friction polish.
Very nice wood and workmanship. Curious about your process. Do you start with your block of wood an inch or two longer than what you plan the box to be tall? 8)
Thanks gang, this one is even nicer in person, the red is really nice.
Rev, I start out with a block that has a tenon on each end plus about 1/2", this gives me space to work to get things squared up and such when jam chucking and working to get the totally flat top and slightly concave bottom. Better to have more than not enough material. The top of the lid and the bottom of the body have wall thicknesses of 1/8" or so. The walls are about 3/16". On the inside, bottom it is just a hair concave. I found that if I put the slightest radius on my square scraper I can get a better transition on the inside.
Rev, forgot to mention one thing, the other reason I leave extra is so that I can make the jam chuck needed for turning the body bottom out of the left over stock, this saves time by not having to go searching for a blank that will work.
Great job Chris. And like you, I think that that particular shape works fine without a knob, and certainly without a finial. You really took full advantage of that beautiful wood.
