Gary you always ask for comments, and usually all I can say is WOW. This time however, I can say WOW but, I for some reason I can't get past the maple lid. Sorry dude it doesn't work for me. It looks out of place and stands out too much. It may be an illusion of the Pic but it doesn't seem to meet the box well, like it is too big at the place where it meets the box.
I'm certainly no art critic but I'm going to have to agree somewhat with Philip and Gil. There is so much going on in the burl wood that it would have been beautiful by itself or with a lid from the same wood. But the maple lid breaks it in some sort of unnatural way. I like the finial though and think it adds to the piece and would look great on a burl lid. That said, I'll ask you a question. Does an intensely figured piece of wood require a simple form to avoid the form and wood competeing with each other?
Thanks for all your thoughfull comments. I was on the fence re' the maple lid. My goal was to try to tie in the sap wood edge of the burl. Maybe too much maple, or too glossy, maybe too stark of a transition. Some one on another post sugested a band of ebony at the bottom of the lid to smooth the transition. Maybe an all ebony lid and finial? cfuller I think you are right. You have to be mindfull of not overdoing it when using burl. It can become so buisy that you create compitition between the form and the figure, and deminish both. Again thanks for the input. It's really great to be able to see these things through your eyes too. Gary
