I number all of my pieces and keep a record of them in a computer file which records what it is, measurements, etc etc. I store and label pictures by number. The number also contains in it (in a way at least I can read it), the approximate date of the turning. And if someone sees a piece on a website and is interested, the number uniquely identifies it.
I've read that populus is a genus of trees which includes cottonwoods, poplars and aspen, all of which are sometimes termed "poplars". I think what you may know as aspen is what we refer to up here as poplar. And yes, it is a bit spalted.
