I make knitting needles for a Lady I know who owns a knitting shop. These are about 6.5 inches and double point making the single points with the stoppers at the back are lots of fun. I'll post a pic of those when I turn some more.
They look pretty neat! I've made a few pairs, and find the biggest challenge to be getting the diameter uniform along the length of the needle. I'm currently working on a requested 10" x 25mm pair. I decided to hollow them so they wouldn't be so heavy. What kind of finish do you use, if any?
I've made quite a few, alot out of the hardwood dowels from wally world, on those I ususally go with a few coats of tung oil, the a coat of wipe on poly to seal any coloring I do, then maybe even a mixture of beeswax and mineral oil to make them real smooth. I've done a pair of Pink Ivory with a coat of tung oil and a coat of poly, I did another pair of the Ivory's with just 2 coats of tung oil, The one's she likes the most is the ebony pair I did for her and they have no finish. She says it doesn't get sticky at all from sweat like the poly finish does. This particular pair of cocobolo just has a couple coats of wipe on poly. But you're right getting the diameter just right is a task and then making it even throughout. The calipers are my best friends. She like he heavyness of them though. But 25mm is a big pair of needles. I guess you would need to or else they could double as dumb bells.
