Here is my first attempt at 2 things, making a tool handle and making a gouge.
The other day I was given some old drill bits and round stock. All HSS. These came from a factory that makes transmission parts.
It took quite some time to get the flute ground, but I have learned a lot from this experiment. I am very pleased with the way the gouge works, it leaves a very nice finish. The one problem is the length of the metal. It will make it impossible to use for deep bowls.
As for the handle, I didn't have any pipe that would fit for the ferrel, so I took some twine, and lots of superglue just so I could test it out. As soon as I can make it to HD, I am going to replace the twine with a proper ferrel...
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have 2 more pieces that are larger in diameter than this one. And from the way they talk I will be able to get all of the bits that they burn up.
It looks like you ground the metal down to make it smaller inside the handle?? I don't think i would do that, just make a little bit bigger handle/hole.. for structural integrity!!
the flute is really nice.. looks machined as opposed to ground.
