Olive 3 1/2" Dia 1/8" thick. I thought this was fairly dry when I turned it. Then cracks developed after it was finished. I can't get Olive to not crack. Except with some bookmarks I've made! It is very brittle and I just shave it off, not taking big cuts a all. My wife likes this the best.
It is a fruit wood and some cracking is bound to happen most of the time. One thing you might try to watch the next time you turn olive is your sanding technique. I see where you are "just shaving it off", but we often sand too fast and hard. That creates heat, the enemy of most woods. Just slow the lathe down and don't apply too much presure. It will still sand down.
You've done a nice job with this one. I love the general shape is this one particularly. Not to mention that the wood is beautiful. BTW, get this piece out of the "OOPS" gallery. It's too good for that. 8)
