Highly figured fiddleback maple bowl with red chestnut spirit stain airbrushed onto the rim. 7 1/2" dia. x 2 1/4" tall, the "inner" bowl is 4 1/2" dia. and follows more of a U shape while the outside is more of a curved V shape. Has a great feel of heft and balance.
Thanks everyone.
Gil, the wood was bone dry when turned and the finish is dry in the photo, the piece took the lacquer so well that even now days later it still looks wet. I have a blue one on the lathe now and 2 more blanks that will receive green and yellow. I really like the look and the technique to get the crisp edges is very simple.
What I did is to turn the outside first, then flip it into a chuck. Once on the chuck, I turned the face flat and sanded to 600. Then I used an airbrush with a 50/50 air to stain mix and airbrushed the entire face from center out. This works really well as the Chestnut Spirit Stains have a very thin penetration and almost no overspray when sprayed on. Then I turn the inner shape and sand, with the thin penetration, turning the inner bowl last yeilds a crisp edge. Flip it around in a jam chuck, finish turning the foot and then sand the outside starting at 120 to get the crisp edge on the outside back and then part it off the lathe.
