I think I am nuts. This one may be tough to finish. Several natural cracks in this piece. That's the one problem with this stuff. Luckily the large crack in the bottom doesn't go all the way through.
That's a heck of a nice chunk of wood. It would make me real nervous with those cracks though. I guess if it comes apart you'll still have some big pieces though.

Keith, it shouldn't be too hard to finish. An oil finish may just stabilize the cracks & may even narrow them slightly. It'll be a pretty piece when it's complete. I doubt it'll come apart w/an oil finish.
What's left to finish? It looks like the hard part (turning it) is done to me...if all yuo have is sanding and applying a finish, I say turn on a good CD and go for it.
This burl was very wet so I turned it about an inch thick and it's drying. It is moving alittle, so it will get a finish turn. The crack on the lower right has opened up some and so has one on the upper left. I'm going to have to key them together to finish it.
