This is the final product of the "thin enough" piece I posted a bit ago. Sycamore (turns out it wasn't birch) vase, 7" tall x 5 5/8" dia at the rim, 5/64" wall thickness (thin wall starts at the bottom of the cambium layer line). Dyed with Blue Chestnut Spirit Stain. Finish is 8 coats of Rustoleum high gloss lacquer. Turned end grain to get the natural edge as a band around the rim. There is a slight undulation in the rim from the drying process.
Thanks Larry, the spirit stain is getting harder to find. I bought large bottles from Craft Supplies, but it is being discontinued. I'm trying to locate another good source for myself and Ned and will post my findings. The lacquer is from a spray can, light overlapping coats like in autobody work. I wet sanded with 600 grit after the third and sixth coats.
