Tazmanian Rose Myrtle Burl and Gaboon Ebony lidded hollow form. 4 3/4" overall height x 4 5/8" dia. x 3/16" wall thickness. Sanded to 800, 3 coats of Tung Oil Finish & 2 Coats of Rustoleum Specialty Lacquer.
After reading Cindy Drozda's article in the AAW Journal, I re-thought my lid and finial design and tried something new. The lid on this piece is a shallow volcano shape that flows out to a bead. The lid and finial were turned as 2 separate pieces, joined by a glued tenon and recess combo.
Larry, I always make the finialed pieces removable. I try to make the insides nice and smooth for this purpose, I may not always be able to finish it to the same gloss (and sometimes like on this piece I left it unfinished so you could feel the natural wood since I lacquered the outside) but I think if it looks like a lid, it should act like a lid, otherwise I will make a collar.
Outstanding, Chris. Beautiful form and great finial

Nice box/hollow form/whatever, lad. As I've said: finials aren't difficult to turn. What's difficult is turnin' one that compliments the piece. If ya got a minute, this one's not too shabby. The body isn't too shabby either.
When I first looked at the piece I immediately thought of Cindy & her "cover piece" for the article.
Thanks everyone! What great comments, I'm glad this one went over so well.
Keith, I feel like I have lived in my shop for the last 2 weeks getting ready for my gallery show on Saturday. Wanted to have some truly elegant and vibrant pieces to go with the usual. This week (Saturday - today) alone I have spent close to 30 hours turning on top of the 32 so far I have worked at the day job.
