Yesterday's big project, 3 salad bowl, 2 of which are sold. All maple. The biggest one is 13 3/4" x 4 1/2"...next one is 11 1/4" x 3 1/4", last one is 10 7/8" x 2 3/4". All finished with walnut oil. All have textured bands, and doubled beaded rims. The right hand one I textured the band and then burnt the texture with a propane torch to get the black.
looks like you had a great day. I'm curious though, is the walnut oil enough of a finish to keep the char from the burned band from coming off on the user's hands and clothes? 8)
Thanks Rev and Gil. Rev, the burn is very light, and with the texture raising the grain and burring like it did, the burn is holding very nicely. I saturated it HEAVILY with the walnut oil and then let it sit overnight, so far the char doesn't even leave a mark on the hands or a soft cloth.
Thanks underdog, Curt and wheels.
Wheels, I bought the blanks kiln dried and then usually allow them to "adjust" for about a month to CA climate. Out of 50 or so of these, I have only had 1 check after turning & finishing.
