This is a piece I have slowly been working on, a lidded hollow form with natural inclusion. It is 3 3/4" dia x 4 3/4" overall height. Brown Mallee Burl (New Zealand) for the body and Gaboon Ebony for the lid/finial. About 1/8" thick due to the inclusion and a large punky area in the back.
On a side note, I found out if you hit punky areas with a deep saturation of sanding sealer, then thin CA glue followed up with epoxy mixed with various wood dusts pushed into any low areas, you can cure punky areas well enough to get an even, smooth finish...just couldn't bear to let this piece beat me. I'll post pics of the punky area later tonight.
Good job. Probably thin enough for this one. But next time... Very pretty piece. Is that from the last trip to the wood store? By the way, did you post that for my benifit? This finial looks pretty good too. It's going to be pretty hard to change my mind on them in general though. 8)

Well, lad, at least you didn't have any trouble gettin' rid of the hollowing shavings. I assume you spun this about as fast as the "mustard monster" could. The piece isn't that big so you may not have even noticed the void except when hollowing. You have a good, light, touch, Chris; it'd been easy to put a tool through that void=duck & cover.
I've been workin' (for lack of a better term) on a hollow form of maple burl about 4 times the size of this one for about 2 yrs. It has three voids. One of these days I'll get up enough intestinal fortitude to take out the last 1/4" from the inside.
Thanks guys, yeah I know 1/8" is a bit thick for my usual stuff but ya do what ya gotta do... This was a piece of burl from my last wood store trip. Gorgeous stuff, but tough as all getout. Had to sharpen a number of times when hollowing.
Rev, admittedly the larger lidded forms like this do look a lot better than the smaller ones do simply because of proportions...I'll turn ya yet! Oh and by the way to help convince you, this one sold today for a pretty nice price
