This is the first winged form I've made. It started as an irregular slab of maple burl with a natural edge. I bandsawed three sides to get the rectanglar shape. It's 8 1/2" long x 5" wide. The wing is 3/16" thick. It sits 3/4" high. It is finished with lacquer, although it still needs buffed. First time I've used lacquer. I used negative scraping that Stuart Batty has been promoting for the finishing cuts on the wing and it worked really well. This is the one I posted a while back in rough form trying to show the finish left by the negative rake scraping
Knowing it's only 3/4" high makes me appreciate the scale of the bowl. I find myself making the bowl bigger as I make more of these, until it almost reaches the sides. To me that makes the wings more pronounced. I need to try some sort of neg. scraper soon.
