This was a major project for a Christmas gift - special order commission. The original idea was simply a bottle stopper, then a couple, then a holder for them, then I was asked to come up with a cool display for them.
As I designed a couple of ideas, I thought why not incoporate a wine bottle coaster into the mix. This was the end result of lots of designs and 5 1/2 hours of turning & assembly. (Took some time to figure out how to make the thing).
Bloodwood top & bottom, purpleheart 'legs'. The legs were made to look like wine droplets running down. The top has openings to hold 4 bottle cones. The bottle stopper is the first of 4 for the collection. It is turned from rose mytle. Overall dimensions, 4" tall x 6" max. dia. There is a textured band on the edge of the base and top.
Very nice idea, have seen many coaster/cone combos, but this is by far the most elegant. Is that a cork insert? For even more elegence, would consider marble for the next one, though the cork is easily replaceble and you won't crack anything with it.
Good design, and execution, Chris.
Where you live, a mini, wooden,
Ships wheel might be incorporated
in the top and/or bottom disk, for
the nautically inclined customer.
Thanks Ned and Gil. I had thought about marble, but the attraction to cork is also the fact that over time as wine runs down the bottle it won't run off and stain the wood. If it gets "messy" over time the cork can be renewed easily, the wood wouldn't be so easy to repair.
I don't plan on making any more of these. It took longer than would be profitable in a production setting, plus I enjoy making originals.
Chris, not only is that a great design and beautiful craftsmanship, but it brought back some wonderful memories for me of my grandfather. He had a pipe holder that was similar but held his pipes where your stoppers go and a jar or can of tobacco where your wine bottle sits. Thanks for posting that!
