This is the big brother of the Ash salad bowl I posted last week. A customer asked for 2 of them for Christmas presents. This one measures 14 3/4" dia. x 5 1/2" tall. Walnut oil finish, textured with the Sorby tool.
Chris, that's a beautiful bowl. The Mountain Ash carries an interesting story with it. I found this on a google search that makes the bowl even more interesting...
"This tree is one of the most revered plants in the folklore of the Old World. It warded off evil influences and was ?Thor?s helper?; bits of the wood were thought to avert almost any disaster."
Thanks guys, I really enjoy doing these bowls, but this deep one was a bit of a pain due to overhang.
Great story Curt, I'll tell the client about it, I'm sure the recipients of these (they are Christmas gifts) will enjoy the story.
Rev, the finish is simply burnished walnut oil, works well and is easy to reapply. My mom got one last year and it still looks great. She said she reapplies a light coat with a paper towel after every 2 or 3 "washings".
I'll shoot the afore promised video on using this tool this weekend jimmy. I had planned on doing one before but forgot about it, thanks for the reminder. It's about time I do another couple of videos.
