Now that's a long name for a piece. This is one of the Tazmanian Rose Myrtle Burl pieces I got at the wood store trip. 4" x 4", one coat of BLO so far, more to go. Had to give one of those pieces a turn tonight...they were calling to me.
Very good. It is still amazing to me how beautiful burl wood is. Just wish it wasn't so expensive and/or more readily available to be cut in the woods. I have a project in mind that is just waiting for a nice burl. Beautiful piece, Chris. 8)
Unusually beautiful Chris. Before you started, what sort of a judgement did you have to make in order to get that wonderfully ragged rim? I have never taken on a piece of burl.
Thanks guys, I have a bit more work to do on the finish so it should get deeper and shinier than this.
Jim, as far as orientation, small to medium burls are nice to work with because you can use a 2 prong drive center and then move the piece around to orient the edge however you like between centers. On this piece I was lucky and it was cut in such a way that already maximized the edge.
Thanks Gil. I did not glue a waste block mainly due to laziness. I didn't feel like waiting for glue to dry, so I turned a 1" dia x 3/8" long tenon for the #1 Stronghold jaws to grip onto. On future pieces I will use a glue block to minimize waste. The burl had a small "extra" cut on the bottom that was about 1/4" deep that I needed to turn away anyway so waste wasn't an issue.
