Another from Kansas. I took a wire wheel and my drill to it. Sides were relatively strait when I rough turned them and I kept it that way. Finish is danish oil. Same light ring like the other two photos, no clue what caused it. Was in a hurry and used the flash on the kitchen counter.

I think the ring ya see is the reflection off the counter top
Hey Ned, nice first attempt at texturing. The only suggestion I can make is to get the form first and then apply your texturing so your form flows regardless of the enhancement.
That explains it, I had them sitting on a granite countertop.
Thanks Chris, this was rough turned a over a year ago, and it had the strait side. At that time I was thinking about beads there, but saw the wire wheel and couldn't resist. This side were strait at the beginning. When I was first startingout the apealed to me, and I was pretty much stuck with them. I have a couple more like this waiting to be finished, the new challenge is changing the profile while finish turning.
