This seems real gratuitous to be nominating my own piece, but what the heck.
This piece is about 13" by 7". African Sumac is grown around here (Phx/AZ) as a landscape tree. It's color changes from a pale pink/gray when turned to the red/orange/brown with exposure to sun light. It has good chatoyance as well.
Hi Paul,
I also put my own in, mainly because I set out the 12 boxes/months and tried to pick a variety of shapes and types, I found it difficult so I added a couple of my own for variation, I do appreciate you can only have one piece in, Im sure all the guys are ok with self nomination.
Your piece, Its beautiful in every sense, and your photo does it justice. one question, what is chatoyance?
Hi Boots,
Thanks for the nice comments. Chatoyance is the reflective quality of wood when view from different angles. When you rock it back and forth the wood seems to change. Hope this is clear enough. Hard dense wood seems to have more chatoyance than soft wood.
