The grain at the join looks a very good match, presumably you used a very thin parting tool and sleeved to produce a collar, this is something I would do for 100% grain match, haven't turned a box to do this yet but when I have five minutes. Just a personal thing but I prefer not to see the join. Excellent photo.
Love this box Ken, glad you added it to the running. I think the join looks great on this piece. It does depend on the piece I believe. With this piece if the join had been completely blended it would have taken away the visual mystery that makes you want to open it.
I lucked out on the grain match here, I believe it has something to do with the top being a bit larger than the body. Also, the tenon is quite short, only 1/8".
This doesn't have a rim insert like I've been doing lately, I turned it early last spring before I came up with that idea.
