From the same log as the previous beech vessel only this is turned end grain. It has a carved ring and texturing near the top. 8 X 6"

This is a wonderful piece. I do have a question for you though. With all that is going on in the grain, what was your reasoning for the carving and texturing? It just seems like too much to me. 8)

Nicely shaped piece, and your finish is good too! The carved flutes are little bit distracting (though well done) with all the eye-catching grain/colors.

You both are absolutly right. I chalk it up to having new toys and being too impatient to wait for the right piece to use them on. You live and learn!

Your individual techniques are good (at least to me), I would just chalk it up to learning. Actually, it would fit in my donut chuck; and then you could easily remove the fluting, and even the texturing it you wanted to. Sand and refinish that area, and is what happens. Or leave it as is, after all, the fluting is merely a visual distraction. I know how you feel about the toys.
