Thanks RevDoug. Mother nature did all the coloring. Unfortunately the red will fade with time. I havn't found any finish that will keep the red from fading in box elder.
Gary that's a beautiful bowl. I love the red in the box elder that comes from the central and eastern part of the US. I wonder if you know what the species is and if it's the same tree that grows here in Utah. I've had burls, plain straight grained wood, even root but never seen even a hint of red in it.
cfuller, I think box elder is "Acer negundo L.". Also known as Manitoba Maple. The red is very common here in NY, in burl and in stressed arias in the tree.
