That is a real nice piece, Rick. It looks smooth, but hard to tell about the finish on my screen (could just be old eyes). The shape is fine, but I like the way the ring lines undulate around like a sine wave. How was it placed on the lathe in reference to vertical growth? I have a two-foot long by 10? dia Hackberry log, and from the outside it is ugly, guess I had better test it. Is the gray color spalting or natural color? Thanks; I was wondering what the wood looks like.
Thanks Gil. This was roughed last year, so my recollection of it's original orientation is sketchy. You can see a small pith at about 1:00 on the piece that went straight across, but I can't figure where in the tree this might have come from. The gray is natural color. I originally put some Watco Satin Finishing Wax over sanding sealer, but did a p*ss poor job, so I sanded it off best I could, then just took it through the 3 bealle buffs.
