13" diameter and 5 3/4" tall. Roughed out in January and decided to finish it. I love this wood. The grain is distinct, the patterns are beautiful and and the wood turns well. The only finish I used was the Beal buffing compounds on bare wood.
Nice work Phil, I like the rim treatment, very subtle. How sturdy is catalpa? I have a chunk that I want to turn a spin top out of, is it a pretty hard wood? On a scale of poplar to osage, where would it fall ?
Probably close to poplar. It feels somewhat light I woudl say just a bit above Mimosa, or camphor (if you have ever turned either one of those. Nice working wood and has a distinct aroma that I like. Rather pungent, like olive wood.
That's really a nice bowl Philip. I like the gentle curve and plainess of it. The finish goes with it well too. Is catalpa the tree that has the big broad leaves and grows bean pod looking things on it?
Curt
I think so. I know that it has a real broad flat leaf but I'm not sure about the long bean pod. I know that a worm that inhabits the tree is a real sought after fishing bait.
