Mahogany Salt & Pepper Mills

Description}: One set down and 2 to go. I think I might just get everything turned in time for Christmas! I turned these tonight from some Mahogany blanks I picked up from Woodworkers Source. This was my 1st time turning mahogany and I like it. Turns easy and sands up even easier. These are just over 8" tall and finished with danish oil. I'll give them until saturday to cure and then hit them with some Ren wax. I wanted to keep the forms clean and simple, I almost added some grooves as an accent then decided I liked the clean look so left it alone. Took lots of measuring to get the 2 mills as close to identical as I could, and I think I did a pretty good job of it. I think this set will be going to my oldest sister. Thanks for looking! Sisso Platter

Description}: Dalbergia Sissoo (Indian Rosewood) I've done some platters before, but none that I've really, really liked. They were ok and for the most part, I liked them, but they were not favorite pieces by any means. Don't know what it is about platters that makes them so hard for me to get right, but I think I got it right with this one. The pics don't do this piece justice (I think I would have gotten better pics out in the shop with my cell phone). Turned Green 11" x 1 1/2" with a coat of walnut oil. Thanks for looking! Description}: Same sissoo bowl with 2 Acacia bowls and a Mulberry bowl. The Acacia bowls are 4 3/4" x 1 1/2" and the Mulberry is 3 3/4" x 1", all with just a coat of Danish Oil so far.

Description}: Turned green from Dalbergia Sissoo (Indian Rosewood). It's 8" x 2" with just a coat of Danish Oil so far. Sissoo is a dream to turn and is pretty stable.

Description}: Our club had an all day demo with Chris Pytlik on Saturday. This was my attempt at his process. The bulb is maple, the icicle and hanger are pecan. Finished with spray lacquer.

Description}: From left to right: Eucaluptus 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" Mesquite 1 1/4 x 1 3/4" Mesquite 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" All have snap fit lids, finished with a light coat of BLO and a coat of lacquer sanding sealer.

Description}: I came into some Jacaranda this weekend and this is one of the pieces I turned from it. 4" x 5 1/4" finished with BLO and just a coat of sanding sealer. I'll be adding some WOP and then knock the gloss down with steel wool for a soft satin finish.

Description}: Turned this from what I believe to be some type of acacia. 7" (including finial) x 3 1/2" finished with BLO then a couple coats of shellac, about 6 coats of WOP and Ren wax.

Mesquite Bangle

Description}: After watching a Jimmy Clewes DVD (Thanks JimQ)that included a bangle project, I decided to turn one of my own. Mesquite turned endgrain. I drilled holes and filled with turquoise inlace. The inside diameter is about 2 1/2" and the width is about 1/2". Finished with BLO followed by a light coat of lacquer sanding sealer and then Ren wax.

Mesquite Lidded Box

Description}: 6" tall 3 1/2 wide at the top and base, tapering slightly to where the lid meets the box, walls are 1/8". Just a coat of DO so far, will finish up with some WOP. This was dry mesquite cut down about 5 years ago and left in the firewood pile.

Pecan HF dyed

Description}: My 1st attempt at using dyes. The dye is Rit navy blue (I know, it doesn't look very blue). Considering the pecan started out very light, the dye did work, it just came out more of a blue-black. Finished with WOP, Bealled buffed and Ren wax.

Description}: The one on the left was turned quickly just to see how the grain looked, so there's not much form there. Both are finished with DO and WOP then Bealle buffed and Ren wax. The one on the right was soaked in DO for 24 hours, then stored in a ziplock bag for about a week. It darkened the color and gave it a more brown-gray color (doesn't show well in the pic).

Description}: These were turned from the same log. The one on the left was turned endgrain and the one on the right was turned facegrain. I like the one on the right better, both the form and the spalting look better to me. Finish is DO and WOP, then Bealle buffed and Ren wax.

Description}: 7 1/2" x 2 1/2" finished in tung oil. I love the grain and color of this wood. Turned green and finished in one shot. The cracks were in the blank before turning, filled with CA and coffee.

Description}: More dunno wood. Got the wood from Woodworkers Resource in their 1$ scrap bin. They did know the wood is from Mexico. The dark one looked and turned alot like wenge (it's not really black, just very dark brown with black rings). the lighter one has very open poors like oak, turned and sanded easy and the color varies from goldish to orangish.

Description}: Dunno wood (I think it's australian bottle tree) forgot to measure, it's about 4"w x 3"t, spray on lacquer. This is going to my 14yo niece for christmas. Drilled out the pith on the bottom and filled with gold glitter so I just dusted the outside and inside with more glitter.

Pistachio Box

Description}: 3 1/4" x 1 3/4" finished in WOP and Beall buffed. The day after it was turned the box developed a large crack that ran from top to bottom, all the way through to the inside. I had pretty much given it up as a lost cause and set it aside on the workbench. A couple of weeks later I was reorganizing and I found it, the crack had closed back up. You can barely see or feel it now.
