Description}: This is a little, natural edge birdhouse. The top finial is poplar that was stained with TransTint, the roof is Siberian elm, the body is box elder. The bottom finial is part of the body. Finished with lacquer.

Description}: This one is a standard globe ornament. The globe is walnut, hollowed out to as thin as I dared. The top finial is spalted chestnut, the bottom is box elder. All finished with lacquer. Globe diameter is about 1 1/2 inch and the length is around seven inches.

Description}: This is another seed pod turning that I finished off as an ornament. The body is Russian olive, the stamen is box elder, and the finial is oak. I've added glass beads for seeds. The inside is colored with shellac and TransTint die. Final finish is spray on lacquer.

Square Natural Edge Spalted Birch

Description}: This is from some wood I rescued from a burn pile. I had split the log and turned a regular bowl with the other side. When this challenge came along, I was looking at what I had ready to turn and this is what jumped on and off the lathe. Eight inches on the sides and about five inches tall. Finished with several coats of Danish oil and a couple top coats of lacquer.

Walnut Platter

Description}: This was an old, ugly, board I picked up from my step sister in-law's garage when she moved. It was gray, stain spilled on it, and checked in places. I found this gem hiding inside. 11 inches in diameter, finished with Danish oil and hand buffed.

Spalted Birch Vase

Description}: I hope the bright spot isn't too much. I can try again if needed. This is from some birch I rescued from a burn pile at the yacht club. Reverse turned. Finished with several coats of Danish oil and two coats of spray-on lacquer. I personally liked it better without such a high gloss but was told the finish was poor at a local fair.

Box Elder Burl Box

Description}: This is a box made from box elder burl. I didn't want to lose all of the surface figure and it wasn't quite interesting enough or large enough for platters most like to make. The finial is also made from box elder. The body is about six inches wide and four inches tall. Finished with Danish oil and a lacquer top coat. The finial was finished on the lathe with friction applied and polished shellac.

Description}: Wanting a change of pace from standard bowls and birdhouses, I grabbed a piece of burl I had kicking around and this is what I came up with. I used some red TransTint dye in DNA. I think I got the saturation too high. I wanted to see if the grain would show more because there is no color to the wood. I think it works with the black plug and final, also made from box elder. The body is about seven inches wide and five inches tall. Coated with Danish oil and then top coated with lacquer.

Description}: This is a bowl I turned from a burl I'd had kicking around the shop for over a year. There is a turners' challenge at the local club for turning something from an unusual chunk of wood. This was what I came up with. About eight inches tall by six wide. Finished with Danish oil.

Aspend and Birch Vase

Description}: This was actually a save that turned out much better than the original idea. I was going to make a vase with a bead around a small opening. When I was almost finished with the hollowing, I got over confident and blew out the rim when I was withdrawing the hollowing bar to clear the chips. Not wanting to feed the fireplace, I cut a little spalted birch to it, blended it in, and then perforated the rim with a bur bit in a Dremel. There is a small neck in the center that doesn't show well to keep prying fingers out of the inside.

Description}: This is another in the reverse turning series. This is from some heavily spalted birch I rescued from a burn pile at the lake. 7 3/4" tall by 4" wide. Finished with Danish oil. The oil deepened the colors and really brought out the spalting.

Pine serving dish with pyrography

Description}: This is another attempt at a little pyrography. The Serving dish is 11 1/2" wide and 1" deep. A picture of a chickadee is burned on using a pyrography pen with a knife tip. Finished with Danish oil and one coat of spar varnish on the inside to help the glossy look.

Description}: The whole thing is about 9" long. The globe is hollowed and is about three inches in diameter. Finished with lacquer and buffed with paste wax. I was going to do a birdhouse but I did one last year. I had several picked out but in the end, I went with this globe.

Wedding goblet

Description}: I'm not sure of the wood. The owner of the wood pile said it might have been from an ash tree but I don't know for sure. Finished with lacquer. It stands 10 inches tall, the bowl is three inches wide, and the stem is one quarter inch thick.

Box Elder Candlestick Holders

Description}: These are some candlestick holders I recently turned. They are turned like you would to inside out turning, then on axis to finish the top and bottom. They are about 14" tall and the ribbons are about an inch and three quarters wide. The finish is lacquer.

Description}: I decided to have some fun today. I'd made the bottle a few weeks ago. It is another "revers turning" out of box elder. Finished in several coats of Danish oil. It stands about ten inches tall and is about seven inches wide. I was playing with making flowers using the skew and decided to make a stopper to hold them. The flowers are out of mulberry and airbrushed with water color paint.

Extreme Goblet

Description}: This is an aspen goblet I made using a spindle steady I just finished making. The bowl of the goblet is right at the top of the trunk where the branches start so there are several branches and wild grain going up the side. Finished with spray-on spar varnish, it stands 14 1/2 inches tall and five inches at the top.

Description}: This vase is made from some white birch I rescued from a wood pile. I love the spalting and it was a fun project. I used Dale Nish's "reverse turning" method to make it. The neck is bored with a 1/4" D bit I made. It stands 9 inches tall and is about four inches wide. The finish is several coats of lacquer.

Description}: This is one from the thread "Just For Fun" where I challenged people to do something similar. It is a technique I learned from Dale Nish he calls "revers turning". The wood is some white birch that somehow jumped out of a cummunity firewood pile and landed in the back of my truck. There is some nice spalting and the wood was nice to work with. The finish is several coats of lacquer and it stands nine inches tall by about four inches wide at the base. The neck is boared to a half inch.

Description}: This hollow form was turned from green box elder using the "reverse turning" method. There is a PDF in the TPT section under hollow forms. It is a little over six inches in diameter and the hole at the top is 1/4" wide. The knot made it difficult to make a more ornate opening so I kept it simple.

Scrub Oak Vase

Description}: Here's another "revers turning" made from some scrub oak I salvaged from my father in-law's. It stands about seven inches tall and is about five inches wide. Finished soft with one coat of Danish oil. It cracked, especially when it hit the floor when the first attempt and gluing the plug in failed. I still love it and the top looks like a flower when you look down from the top.

Scrub Oak

Description}: This is a little hollow form I made from some scrub oak I removed from my father in-law's back yard. It turned out to be quite spalted but solid because the stump was left standing. This was also my first go with my hollowing tool I made with a ghetto laser pointer. It sure made getting the thickness a lot easier.

Description}: This is a hollow form I made out of aspen. I intended to put a little lip on it but I had a tool catch while I was working on the shoulders so I had to rethink the design. I finished it by friction applying paraffin then buffing with some paste carnuba wax.

Juniper Natural Edge

Description}: This is a little juniper piece. This winter has been hard on trees and I'm getting all kinds of wood. The pith on this was very close to one side. I think the tree had been split while it was young. Since it isn't very round, I thought it would make a fun natural edge piece and the log was only about seven inches wide. Not much for a bowl but this was a fun one.

Description}: I'm not sure what kind of tree these came from but I posted the pictures of them in the forums after they came off the lathe in a productive Friday night after work. Here they are all finished. They range from four inches tall to about six. The finish is lacquer. Put them together like this and I think they look like tulips.

Description}: This is an end grain, natural edge, Chinese elm piece. I've been trying to branch out a bit and try some new things. This is a little thick for some but it was very wet and heavy for my lathe. Too much vibration to go much thinner. The finish is Danish oil.

Description}: I got on a kick of making plates this last week-end. This one is 11 1/2 wide and about an inch thick. When I slabbed this out of an old dry Russian olive log I was given, I thought it would be too thin but it worked out. I didn't make much of a coupe on it because I wanted a platter I could serve a cake on the next time I make someone a birthday cake. It is finished just with walnut oil.

Natual Egde Willow

Description}: This was a large one. It is about twelve inches tall by about ten inches wide. Being end grain, it took quite a while to turn. I turned it to finish thickness using a light to judge how thick it was and boiled it to stop cracking but still ended up with one small crack that was repaired with coffee and CA. The finish is spray one polly.

Description}: Another willow natural edge piece. This one is about nine inches tall and about six inches wide. Turned on the end grain green, allowed to dry as it was with the tenon on but partially removed. Then remounted to sand it down. The finish is spray on spar urethane.

Description}: This is a willow hollow form I recently finished. It is about seven inches tall and three and a half wide. I turned it to finished size and thickness green and partially removed the tenon because I wanted to see if I could stop the tenon from cracking up into the foot. It worked and I remounted it to sand it down. Finished with lacquer.

Cottonwood Bowl

Description}: This is a bowl made from a cottonwood tree that was cut down at a local pee wee baseball park. I grabbed all I could lift and fit in the trunk. There is still some at the field that I'm not sure if I want to get help lifting int into the truck or not. The finish is spray on polyurethane.
