Description}: This is a piece of Buckeye Burl with a dyed black walnut base. The goblet's dyes are black, green, yellow and a tad of golden orange. The inside is natural and the undercut rim was colored black with a marker so it wouldn't bleed. 1/16th thick and finished with tung oil and nervously Beall buffed. Square Bowl

Description}: This piece of spalted pecan came real close to being firewood (or pens). Key word being spalted. Kept on going anyway and this is what it turned into. 11" x 2.5" tall. My main objective was to make the sloping bowl bottom look like it was coming straight through the top. You can't see it in this photo, but it worked out OK. Maple Burl Cap Compote

Description}: Some talk about burl caps got me to finally throw this on the lathe and just make something out of it. Big Leaf Maple that I hoped to save the spikes on, but it just wasn't in the cards I guess. It's dyed black (heavy around the edges), red and yellow. The pedestal is from another piece of scrap maple burl. 7.5" tall x 7.5" wide at the rim, 1/16 thick and finished with tung oil and nervously Beall buffed. Eucalyptus Box

Description}: This box is a culmination of Mike Stafford's box class at John Campbell Folk School, Jamie Donaldson's winged bowl demo (at the class)and a rock shop near Campbell. What a class that was! A wild but terrific bunch. I didn't bring anything home, so I made this as soon as I got back. It's made from a block of Eucalyptus I bought off one of the students. 10" X 4.5" to the top of the "flame". They tell me the polished slice of rock is purple, so I'll go with that. Buckeye Burl Platter

Description}: Hi Folks! This platter kind of gave me a run for my money. It had a ton (OK, half a ton) of sand, gravel and little rocks in most of the bark inclusions. I could only cut for about 3" before I had to reach for another tool, or re-sharpen. The contrast between the soft, and in places, punky wood made it a challenge to sand or cut. I even went through 1-1/2 Hunter carbide tips getting it done. Anyway, this is what came out of it. It's 17.5" dia. and finished with Tung Oil and Beall buffed. Oak Burl Bowl

Description}: I haven't posted anything for a while because I was turning a bunch of small stuff. This was a big Oak burl that I got from a local sawyer. He's now my best buddy :-) It's 7" tall X 14" across. Thanks to Frank Penta for his help and the use of his Oneway lathe. I had a ball turning this. It's finished with Tung Oil and Beall buffed. Buckshot Buckeye

Description}: 18.5" Buckeye Burl platter. I really enjoyed turning this even though it was a little nerve wracking at times worrying about an important piece coming off, but none did. A bit punky in spots, but some shellac mix helped that a lot. Some texturing along the rim and some on the back as well. Thanks for looking and all comments are more than welcome.

Sunset Voyage

Description}: This is the second and last piece of maple I had that I thought deserved to have a ship on it. All the grain does the work. The only coloring is on the rim and the sun, which is a knot that's dyed two different yellows. It's 16" across and 2" tall. Finished with Tung Oil and Ren. wax. In person the waves have more of a rolling affect given the ample amount of chatoyance. I suppose I should start naming some of my pieces. Does anyone have a better title than Sunset Voyage? Purpleheart Shell Platter

Description}: Been a while since I listed anything. This is a Purpleheart platter with a lot of dots :-) The shells are burned with a nice Burnmaster. I didn't have the right tip for the dots, so I used a soldering iron which didn't like to stay very hot. Took forever! It's 16" diameter and 2" tall. Finished with Tung Oil and Ren. wax. This was tough to photograph with my limited skills so I added another photo for detail. All comments are more than welcome and thanks for looking, Don L.

Lorraine's Bowl

Description}: To make a long story as short as I can, a long lost good friend of mine's Mother had recently past away and his sister said she saw a bowl I made with a dragonfly shape in the wood. Both her and her Mom enjoyed looking at dragonflies darting around and she thought it would be a great way of remembering her Mother. That particular bowl was long gone, but I made her this one. I liked her Mother also. Very nice person. The dragon fly represents her Mother watching over and nurturing the flower which is Lorraine, the daughter. The Mom might be in silhouette, but the colorful wings show her memory is still very much alive. I shipped this to Lorraine yesterday and I sure hope she likes it. The wood is maple, about 11" diam. and finished with Tung Oil and Beall buffed. The inside is pyrograghy, markers and acrylic paint. All comments welcome, Don L.

Cedar Hollow Form

Walnut Box

Description}: Here's a walnut box with some texturing, woodburning and a pendant insert on top. The woodburned trees on the box's side were meant to go with the tree insert on top. 5" dia. Description}: I made this bowl for my sisters birthday. She liked the Stone look I used on a previous piece so I made her one. I considered painting part of the inside because of some cracks, but decided to leave it alone. It's a pretty big boy at 14" dia. X 6" tall. Finished inside with Tung Oil and Beall buffed. Cocobolo Box

Description}: This is a woman's Cocobolo box. I used a Dremel to carve around the hearts then put some texturing here and there. The top silver piece has a diamond (not a real one!) in the middle. 4.25" diameter X 3" tall. Finished with denatured alcohol for cleaning, one coat of Tung oil and Beall buffed. Maple Coco Tray

Description}: This is a Maple and Cocobolo serving tray with two divisions for separate food. Some texturing and coloring. The center and edges of the top are all textured also, although the photos aren't close enough to show it. It's 13" wide X 9" tall. Finished with Tung Oil and Beall buffed with the little wheels (these worked GREAT)that attach to the lathe. Tenons and epoxy hold it together. A fun project. There is a glass tube that goes right through the center and it just missed the hole. Cool! About 9" tall and finished with Tung Oil and Beall buffed. Sycamore Bowl

Description}: This was a piece of Sycamore that was determined to become firewood. Many months of drying, cracking and pieces flying off when being turned. It started as a huge bowl (oh well). Even when I got it this size and nice and hollowed out, another piece flew off. That's why it curves down like it does (I don't give up easily). Anyway, it's about 12" wide and finished with Tung Oil and Beall buffed. I put the coolest gold tint on this also, but it came off with the Tung Oil. I'll have to try that again with a lacquer finish on something else. Thanks for looking and all comments welcome, Don L.

Description}: Instead of putting eccentric rings around the rim again, I decided to try the opposite and hollow out the middle. Because this was a fairly shallow piece, I lowered the outside rim to give the bowl section the appearance of more height. It's 9" dia. X 1-1/2" tall. Some color added for highlights. Walnut Platter

Description}: Walnut Platter. 13" dia. X 2" deep. The bottom has some voids that I could have turned out if I reversed the piece, but I wanted to have some fun with them. They're colored to match the texture on the top rim and the bowl sits firmly on the wide rim on the bottom. Finished with Tung Oil an Renaissance Wax. Spalted Hackberry Bowl

Description}: This is a spalted Hackberry bowl made from a piece of wood I received from Leo in the wood trade (thanks Buddy!). It's 13" long X 3" tall with some crushed stone around the inside rim. Walnut Vase/Candle Holder

Description}: This walnut piece can be used as a vase (weed pot) or a candle holder. The top piece is maple with a tenon, but a friend thought is was too dark (not enough contrast), so I painted it black. Some texturing on the sides and some gold wax was put in the middle ring for a reverse gold look. Inside is hollowed out. 5" dia. Finished with tung oil and Beall buffed. Pecan Hollow Form

Description}: Pecan hollow form with some brown shoe polish put on it to bring out some of the grain. I left just a tiny bit of the bark section on it for kicks. The pattern is on both sides. 5" dia. Two Tone Vessel

Description}: This is a piece of Myrtle that didn't really have a lot of pizazz going for it. Decided to go with a 2 toned blue color and a tiny bit of pyrograghy near the rim. The lights make it look like the colors bled together but they're actually pretty crisp.It's 6.5" dia. X 5.5" tall and turned pretty thin. Finished with tung oil and Beall buffed. Maple Leaf Tray

Description}: I had another request for a maple leaf tray and this is how it turned out. Couldn't bring myself to embellish it, as I liked the wood the way it was. The ends were cut off the blank first with a band saw and then touched up after it was turned. It's about 11" across at it's widest point. Finished with Tung Oil and Beall buffed. Description}: This is from a Cherry branch a friend gave me. He saw what looked like a "leaf" pattern in the cross section of wood and wanted to know if I could do anything with it. Well, after cutting off the waste wood it looked like a dragon fly (on the left side)(to me). So, this one is for him. Hope you guys get a kick out of it. Nothing added at all, just wood.
