The other day I was given some old drill bits and round stock. All HSS. These came from a factory that makes transmission parts. It took quite some time to get the flute ground, but I have learned a lot from this experiment. I am very pleased with the way the gouge works, it leaves a very nice finish. The one problem is the length of the metal. It will make it impossible to use for deep bowls. As for the handle, I didn't have any pipe that would fit for the ferrel, so I took some twine, and lots of superglue just so I could test it out. As soon as I can make it to HD, I am going to replace the twine with a proper ferrel... :) Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have 2 more pieces that are larger in diameter than this one. And from the way they talk I will be able to get all of the bits that they burn up. :)

5 comments http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=2301&title=first-attempt-at-making-a-gouge&cat=502 http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=2301&title=first-attempt-at-making-a-gouge&cat=502 Thu, 27 Apr 2006 21:44:32 +0000 Winged challenge Piece

by: Derek Jeffries

Description}: Sorry for the delay. I have been sick since last weekend. My piece still needs some finish sanding, and a couple coats of finish. Made out of what I belive is Poplar. As you can see it warped some after turning. The crazy thing about this wood is that it will warp and crack right after turning, but within a few days the cracks have disappeared.

2 comments http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=1877&title=winged-challenge-piece&cat=524 http://www.woodturnersresource.com/wrphotopost/showphoto.php?photo=1877&title=winged-challenge-piece&cat=524 Fri, 17 Feb 2006 20:36:53 +0000 Cracked and Laced

by: Derek Jeffries

Description}: Made from an Oak Scab.
