Description}: After several months away from the lathe I was able to pump this one out. About 6" x 2.5" with all its bark intact. It is about 1/4" thick from top to bottom. Rolls around to a 2" depression on the bottom for a foot. Has 1 application of walnut oil rubbed in at this point. I'll add another application or two then decide whether or not to buff. May well not since the inside is so tight. All C&C appreciated.

Description}: Sea Urchin ornament. This is a first for me. Over height is 3 1/2" tall. The width is approximately 1 3/4". Cap is turned from Manzanita (sp). The icicle is maple. Finished with a dip into GF's Woodturners Finish. Some have been asking about weight. I'm sorry but I have no way of weighing these. It is barely noticeable in your hand. 2011 Fall Goblet C&T

Description}: For your approval: 9 1/2" tall Cup - 2 1/2" wide x 1 3/4" tall Stem - 7 1/2" tall x ~1/8" slim Base - 2" wide Wood is East Indian Rosewood Finish - GF Woodturners Finish Loads of fun to turn since I haven't turned a goblet in a long time. Thought I had some negative pressure on the stem as I turned it, but the further I got from the tail stock, the more vibration I got. No problems though, I got through it without breaking it. This was the first for the Woodturners finish. I think I like it. A couple of more time using it and I'll be able to tell more about it. Questions, comments, and critiques are welcome always. Sorry about the cruddy pic. I'll try to get a better one when I get back home in a few days. 8^)

Hackberry Nightmare

Description}: 9" wide by 2 1/2" tall. Gave me a fit turning it. Was intending to leave most of the bark on the outside, but the biggest part of it went flying when I touched the gouge to it. What I ended up with left me little wood to turn the inside. Pretty thin over the bark of the outside. Rest is pretty thick. Bark even cut into the edge of the rim on one side. There is a limb inclusion on the rim opposite the bark edge. At least it polished up nice. On the bottom there is a wolf starting to sneak up on something. One of my very few nightmares other than Chuck in his turning hat. Any comments or critiques wanted and welcomed.

Description}: Turned from Cherry (duh). 8 1/2" wide by 3 1/2" tall. Sprayed inside and out with red colored water based Lacquer. Nearly buffed through the outside. Did on the inside. Must not have been cured long enough because the inside lacquer came off in one huge sheet. Re-sanded, leaving only a remnant of the red color. Outside is slick as it can be. Still has a few marks in the lacquer though from the buffing too early. Any and all comments and critiques welcome.

Description}: This is my entry into this particular C&T Turned from a branch off a hickory tree that came off our church property. This particular tree was cut up when it came down during the ice storm of 2009. The day after the storm I went out to survey the damage through our woods. As another member and I walked across the property it sounded as if shots were being fired. Other than these "pops," it was eerily silent. A really spooky feeling, so we decided the smarter thing to do was to leave before we got hit with something, like a tree. Thickness is something just less than 1/8". Length is 8". With is 3" on the ends, 2 3/4" in the center. Height is 3" at the tips. There is no foot, just a "smooth" bottom. Finish is Velvit Oil that I will buff out just before I package it up for mailing. Q, C, and C welcomed. BTW, are we beginning to see a theme or what?

Description}: Another pool ball box inspired by Paul Porter. I said with the 13 that LOML was suggesting more of a knob instead of the tall finial. I also said that she's usually right. Not sure I don't agree with her, again. It may just be my finials, but I just like the knob better in general. This was #3 in the series and I think the best of the bunch. I do have one question I'm going to ask Paul about, but the process is getting better all the time. Chuck is working great. C&C welcomed.

13 Ball

Description}: This is the 2nd in the series. I love making these little boxes. Not sure how it happened, but the lid has a bit of a snap fit. Had some trouble with this one and had to remake my chuck. Not so sure that it isn't much better now. In fact, I modified it after I completed this one. Next one should work out even better. Looking forward to getting started on it. Anyway, sanded through all the micro-mesh grits (wet) and polished with Hut's plastic glaze. Ended up holding it against the buffing wheel too to finish up the section that the chuck didn't allow me to get to. Should be fixed now. Finial is Black Locust with a coat of Minwax floor finish on it. LOML is suggesting just a knob on the next one. May have to give it a shot just to appease her. Who knows, she's usually right. We'll see. C&C welcomed.

Description}: Yep, it's a 7 ball. A friend asked if I painted it too. No paint on this at all. While in Phoenix, I had the honor of seeing Paul Porter turn one of these. Learned enough that I figured I could turn one myself. As you can see, the experiment was successful. Improvements will be made for the next one too. Box is hollowed and the lid is from the same ball. Finial is Box Elder. Wet sanded through the micromesh grits and polished with Hut High Gloss Polish for Plastics. Finial treated with EEE and Shellawax. Questions, Comments and Critiques welcome.

Hackberry Vase

Description}: Turned for a fun project challenge that was offered in the forum. Wood is green hackberry that was cut down in the back of my dad's shop. About 7" tall, 3" diameter. Bottom bulb is hollow to about 1/4". Stem is thinner with a center hole of 3/8". Obviously too narrow to be hollowed from the top. Finish is a coat of homebrew that I couldn't begin to tell you what it is, and a coat of Velvit Oil rubbed in by hand until dry to touch. 24 hours to dry and then buffed with Tripoli, White Diamond, and Johnson's Floor wax. All comments, questions, and critiques welcome.

Pear Hollow Form

Description}: This hollow form is turned from a piece of pear with a walnut collar. It was hollowed with the new Easy Wood hollowing tool for the Easy Tool contest. I was so amazed at how well it worked for me. As best I could tell there had been around 12 pieces hollowed out with it and still the cutter had not been turned. I was pretty amazed at how fast I had to stop to empty out the shavings. 4" wide x 2 1/2" tall Finish is Velvit oil which will be buffed. Questions, Comments, and Critiques are always welcome.

Done by request for customer to give as a retirement gift. Love these commissions. I love doing these for folks for several reasons. They give me an excuse to turn. They cause me to look for different woods I can use for pens all the time. They put a few dollars in the tool account. Best of all, they often lead to other sales. Then all the fun begins again. Post Christmas Ornament

Description}: I turned the finial and globe. Dad turned the drop. Both finial and drop are rosewood. The globe is tiger maple. Hollowed with a tool I made from a 16d nail stuck into a pecan pen blank. Measures about 3 1/4" top to bottom, about 1 1/4" diameter. Finish is Velvit oil. Critiques and Comments requested.

Cherry Urn

Description}: At 2:30 I began cutting this log. Cut 2 chunks and hauled them home. Cut these into two and then cut the pith out of all four. Sealed 7 and split the 8th in 2 so that I could do this project twice. Sealed one and took the other to the lathe. Piece is 7" tall and 4" diameter. Wild cherry tree came down in a storm shortly after the ice store in 2009. Still pretty wet. Sanded to 320 and finished with multiple coats of Velvet Oil. This is a memorial urn only since the family has already spread the ashes. Would love to hear your comments and questions.

Call (Deer Grunt) for Summer C&T

Description}: This is a deer grunt, imitating the grunting sound that bucks make. I've used these grunts in the field and have indeed brought bucks into gun range with them. Sold several. Description}: For your viewing pleasure: One Walnut goblet which measures an exact 2" tall. The stem tapers down to a seductive 1/16" thick at the narrowest point. Sanded and finished with Velvet Oil to give a really nice feel. I told my wife it was a Baptist wine goblet. She said that it would hold too much for Baptists. She's right of course. Spring 2010 C&T (A)

Description}: For your viewing pleasure One Black Walnut box which measures 2" wide by 1 3/4" tall. This piece of wood came from a local tree which came down during one of the many storms that blew through our county over the past few years. Once turned it was hand sanded until a baby smooth surface was achieved. Three coats of Velvet Oil was applied, allowed to dry for 15-20 minutes and hand rubbed. This is one I can see being used to present a special ring to that once in a life time gal. As always, comments, critiques, and questions are welcomed. I look forward to hearing what you have to share about it.

$1000 Pen

Description}: Turned with one of the shredded money blanks available at so many of the suppliers. No way to know how much money is there, so my $1000 guess is as valid and anyone's. Kit is an Ultimate Cigar in chrome and gold that I purchased from Woodcraft. Sanded through all the micro-mesh grits and then a couple coats of Mylands friction finish added. Wish I had used a CA finish to give it that smooth, slick feel. However, the slightly rough feel that I have now gives the pen a more secure feel in the hand. Any/all comments are welcome

Description}: This one I barely got in the house and SWMBO laid claim to it. Good thing she has such good taste. Not the greatest picture but it gets the point across. Bowl is 2 7/8” tall x 9” wide. Sanded to 400. Has 2 coats of sanding sealer, Seal-A-Cell. Wet sanded. Several coats of Arm-R-Seal wet sanded between each coat. An ogee curve inside and out. Love to hear your thoughts, good or bad. I already know the pic is cruddy. Need to see about taking a better one so that you can really see it.

Ambrosiad Maple Bowl

Description}: Got this piece of wood @ Choice Woods on discount because it didn't have much ambrosia to it. Came out pretty nice. LOML is going to be pretty particular how this one leaves the house. Thought she was going to come unglued when she thought I was donating it to the auction last week. Anyway, this is one of the prettiest bowls I've done, IMHO. It is 8 7/8" wide by 2 3/4 tall. I think it is a bit deceiving, looks to be taller than that. Anyway, the finish is 4 coats of Seal-A-Cell that were sanded between coats with 400 wet, about 8 coats of Arm-R-Seal, which were also wet sanded with 400 between coats. Not buffing this one because I do not want to pull the finish off like I did with another piece or two. Pretty deep and clear as is. I'll buff up with some Ren. Wax before it goes out the door for sure. All comments and questions welcomed

Rectangular Plate

Description}: This piece is a rectangular plate, 8"x9 1/4" x 1 3/4" tall. The wood is maple that I picked up from the church's by-pass property when we took down some trees. The inspiration for this plate is most assuredly oriental, in fact I had a sushi plate in mind. Lots of stuff going on in this piece, worm holes, ambrosia, fiddleback, etc. All works together to give a lot of interest. Finish is several coats of Seal-A-Cell, hand buffed between with 0000 steal wool, finished off with Beall System, and then Ren. Wax. I just sent it off to a benefit auction for a young lady who has recently lost both legs to a rare disease. I hope it brings a great price for her and the family.

Ash Shallow Bowl

Description}: Nice little piece of Ash I picked up after the ice storm that hit here the end of January. Bowl is 8" wide x 1 3/4" tall. Finish is General Finish, 2 coats of Seal-A-Cell and then about 6 coats of Arm-R-Seal. I wet sanded with 400 between each coat. Used water as lubricant. Haven't decided about the buffing at this point. Might try WD and then carnuba before I use the Renaissance Wax. Slight warp on the rim. LOML says "too bad." I kind of like it with this little bit of imperfection. More organic I think. Questions and comments always welcome.

Olive Ash Platter

Description}: I got this piece of wood from Clay at Choice Woods. He was having a sale on some wood that wasn't first rate before he moved to his new location. Wonderful wood, just didn't have the grain that some does. It is now the property of our nephew and his new wife. LOML gave it to them as a wedding present. Anyway, it is right at 12" wide and about 1 3/4" tall. Sanded to 400 dry and then wet sanded between coats of Seal-A-Cell and Arm-R-Seal. One of the few pieces that I had no problems with. It went smoothly from start to finish. Questions and comments are always welcome.

Osage Orange Bowl

Not flawless, but came out pretty nice for this piece. I don't care much for the shape myself. The intent was something a bit different, but it ended up like this. So it is what it is. Might sell it for something less than the normal. We'll see. Comments and questions always accepted.

Old Yellow Heart Pine Goblet

Description}: This is the companion goblet that I made for myself to go with the heart pine plate that I posted a few days ago. Cup and base are both heart pine. I used a piece of Mt. Mahogany for the stem. I was conserving my pine for some reason. Anyway, the goblet is 3 1/8" wide x 9" tall. Cup is about 1/16" thick top to bottom. There is light that passes through in a couple of places. Finish is DO, buffed down between coats with 0000 steel wool. Must have 10-12 coats on it. Buffed with tripoli, WD, and carnuba. Finally buffed by hand with Ren wax. The base is a tad small, but this is staying in my collection so it really matters not to me. I love it and know where it came from. Would still like to hear your comments and your questions.

Masur Box Open

Description}: Here it is open. As you can see the tenon is not birch but walnut. Really made a nice contrast. When the birch tenon broke off, I first turned a small rabbit in the neck of the box. Then I quickly grabbed this piece of walnut that was close by and turned it to be the right size to insert into the top of the box. Once in place, I turned the inside to the size I wanted and smoothed the inside of the box neck. Fitted the lid to this new tenon and you see the results. Makes for a really nice surprise when you open this little box. As always, comments and questions welcome.

Masur Birch Box

Description}: If I didn't spell the name of this wood correctly, someone please correct me. I bought this piece of wood at the AAW Symposium in Louisville. Just recently decided that it had sat on the shelf more than long enough. Box is 3 1/2" wide x 4 3/4" tall. The design is supposed to be ginger jar inspired. Finish is Seal-A-Cell followed by several coats of Arm-R-Seal. Sanded between coats with 400 w/d using water as a lubricant. Turned and sanded very nicely. My only issue with the whole turning was that I got the bottom edge of the tenon too thin and it broke off. I'll post another pic with the lid off so that you can see the fix. Yellow Heart Pine Bowl

Description}: I thought I posted these before but I don't see it in my gallery. Anyway, this one is about 6" diameter x 2" tall. Finish is loads of DO and then buffed. The wood came from a post that was taken out of a church in Louisville. It had been there for about 120 years. They stopped counting the growth rings at 150. There were more in the post and surly even more in the tree. So the tree began life at least 300 years ago. I got a couple of pieces of it to make a bowl and goblet for the church. I used what was left over to make a set for myself. I'll post the goblet the next post. Any questions and/or comments welcome.

Description}: Roughly 6 1/2" wide x 3 1/2" tall. 1/8" or less thick from top to bottom. In fact, the center of the bottom will let light through without any problem. This is one of those turnings that if I still had a bunch of DO, I would have done the multiple soak and dry cycle thing ala Ron Kent. Finish is several coats of Seal-A-Cell followed by several coats of Arm-R-Seal. This is another case to show us all that too much under the top coat is detrimental to the finial finish. The buffing wheels pulled the top coat right off. I had to sand it back and start again. No more than one coat of the sealer for me from now on. Questions and comments always welcome.

Spalted Pecan Bowl

Description}: I bought this piece of wood from Dale the Burl Guy several years ago. At that time I only had the ShopSmith and it was just too light to do any good with this chunk of wood. Way off balance and even after I got it round. I even took it over to Phil's to get it round. Once round I still had an out of balance blank. It has been sitting on my to-do shelf for a long time, until a few months ago when I pulled it down and turned it on my Nova 1624. This bowl is 9" x 3 3/4". There are 4 coats of Seal-A-Cell and 5 or 6 coats of Arm-A-Seal. Each coat was wet sanded with 400 grit wet/dry. It is still not perfectly smooth because of the various inclusions and deep open grain areas. It was really a joy to turn once I had it on the Nova and applied sharp tools to it. Two Bowls from One Blank

Description}: This is a pair of cotton wood bowls. The smaller bowl was cored out of the larger one using Richard Steuss' Bowl Saw. Proceedure is to turn the outside of the blank, reverse, cut a deep groove into the inside of the bowl, insert the saw into the groove and rotate the saw blade into center. Pretty quick the core pops out and you have 2 blanks. Smaller is roughly 3" x 3/4". I sanded through the bottom and inserted a piece of olive. Came out pretty nice. The larger is about 5.5" x 3". Both are finished with 2 coats of Seal-A-Cell and several coats of Arm-A-Seal. As usual, the cotton wood had nothing going for it before the finish was on it. After the finish, well, you be the judge.

Cherry Box w/Chinaberry Inlay

Description}: This was a pretty cool project. You may remember I turned a similar piece under Jimmy Clewes instruction. This one ended up needing to be plugged on the inside of the lid so I made an olive inlay that would not only fill the top, but fill the opening on the inside as well. Not sure what I did, but the olive inlay on top got too thin as well. So, the Chinaberry went into the top. Always a learning opportunity. Mike, it's all yours now big boy. Hope it fits in your gallery ok. Finish is a couple of coats of Seal-A-Cell followed by 4 coats of Arm-A-Cell, wet sanded with 400 grit between each coat.

Cherry Pot

Description}: This is a small cherry piece that I gave to my secretary for Christmas a couple of years ago. As I remember it was about 3" tall x 4" wide. Sorry about the lousy pic, but it really was a nice little piece. Mostly wanted to test the new settings to see if the thumbnails would settle in proper orientation. Maybe you'll be able to see enough for a bit of inspiration. Hope you like it.

Clews Box Lid

Description}: Here is a close up of the lid. That is a piece of red palm that has been inlayed into the lid. I had never turned red palm before. Jimmy has selected it because it was pretty hard from the beginning. Not much extra work was needed to get it ready for the inlay work other than turning, sanding, finishing, and parting it off. The lid was then recessed to receive the resulting disk. Had I been home doing this I would have used a bit of compressed air to clean the pores a bit, but for a class it was not too bad. Might put another coat of finish on the whole box. I'm thinking that it would really help the lid particularly. Questions?

Description}: Here's the proof Cherry box approx 4" tall x 3" wide Finish is Mylands Friction Polish for now Jimmy Clewes himself was very complimentary of this one. He made a pass or two with a "roughing out" gouge to mate the lid and body. So I can call this a Clewes box, right?
