Tool handles with copper ferrules

Description}: A few of the tool handles I turned recently for my mini files. Made from 3/4" White oak, sanding sealer, copper tubing ferrules. The top two have been patinaed with vinegar to achieve a different effect. The bottom two were sealed after polishing. Was a fun afternoon project.

Exchange Ornament for Mustard

Description}: Pecan with Osage Orange Celtic Knot and Cocobolo finial. 1 1/4" W x 5 1/2" L. This is the first celtic knot I have ever tried, it was fun. After the first one turned to toothpics I kept the second finial kind of simple. Hope you like it Mustard.

Bowling Ball Pen

Description}: Made major points with LOML. I recycled her favorite bowling ball (It suffered a fatal crack recently) into a pen for her to use at work. It came out pretty neat. I am not sure how this material compares to the acrylic blanks but it turned nicely and polished to a nice finish.

Description}: This was another project this week. Mystery wood with slight spalting. 10.5 inches wide and 2.25 inches tall and the wall thickness is 1/4 inch. The finish is Hut friction polish buffed to a nice gleam. This was a practice excercise using my hollowing tool to undercut the lip and maintain wall thickness.

First Pens

Description}: Well, here are my first pens. The two modified slimlines are gift wood so I don't know what the wood is. The center pen is Osage Orange. The finishes are CA applied with all the helpful hints from the forum. Thanks Guys. Pens turned out to be a lot of fun. I have never tried them before because I thought they would be boring. I was wrong.

Description}: Golden Mead Goblet. Pecan with gilded interior and reflective shelf on the stem. 5.7"x2.3" finished with semi-gloss poly. I went for a sturdy design for the hearty mead it's new owner will want after a long day plundering. Drink well mate.

A couple of Letter Openers

Description}: Read about this in a forum thread and just had to try it. The letter openers are ~8" long with 4 1/2"x~1" blades. Sharpened the entire length. The top one is Pecan and the bottom is Spalted Pecan. The top on is finished with sanding sealer and the Spalted one is finished with CA.

Cube C&T

Description}: Here is the completed Cube C&T. It started as a 5" cube of mystery wood (pecan?). Completed it is slightly under 5"x5"x5". The finish is polyurethane. I managed to maintain four of the original corners and six of the original surface planes. I hope you enjoy it Philip. Glyn

Cube Challenge

Description}: Well,here it is, rough no finish yet. This one certainly was a challenge. I think I pushed my envelope a little too far, but it was fun. The original thought was a symetrical (top to bottom) candle holder. That changed a lot as the wood kept adding desigh changes. I had hoped that the wood would move and add some additional interest to the wings, instead it split, checked and cracked as it dried while on the lathe. One of the bottom wing tips in somewhere on the far side of my shop, well four of the original corners are still there. I have a lot to learn about turning green wood. If PhilipE will give me day or two, I think I can improve the looks quite a bit in the finishing process, but he definitly is not coming out on the best end of this trade. If not for the spirit of the challenge this one probably would not have lived to see the light outside my shop.

In/Out C&T Ornament

Description}: 5 1/2"x2 1/4" Maple, finished with satin wipe on poly. A little hidden extra is the interior accent of coffee/brass infill. I picked up the wrong glue bottle for the final stage and the interior glue lines are visible, sorry. This was a fun challenge that pushed me in new areas. I think I would need to make 10-12 of these before I could get to where I could visiualize the I/O finished form from the start. Hope you enjoy it.

Proud Father - Son's 1st Bowl

Description}: My 12 yr old son's first bowl. I am so proud I can't stand it. 4 1/8" x 1 3/4", finished with tung oil. Cedar salvaged from my uncle's farm after hurricane Rita. He carefully designed, turned, sanded and finished it. I supervised, but did not touch ( Dad it's MY bowl!). I may never get to use my lathe again.

Description}: My first box, after 3 attempts. Mystery wood salvaged from a neighbors yard last summer. 3.8"H x 3.2"W. Finished with Tung Oil. This simple box definitely challenged me. I am so hooked on boxes now. I look forward to the next challenge.
