Rectangular Plate

Description}: This piece is a rectangular plate, 8"x9 1/4" x 1 3/4" tall. The wood is maple that I picked up from the church's by-pass property when we took down some trees. The inspiration for this plate is most assuredly oriental, in fact I had a sushi plate in mind. Lots of stuff going on in this piece, worm holes, ambrosia, fiddleback, etc. All works together to give a lot of interest. Finish is several coats of Seal-A-Cell, hand buffed between with 0000 steal wool, finished off with Beall System, and then Ren. Wax. I just sent it off to a benefit auction for a young lady who has recently lost both legs to a rare disease. I hope it brings a great price for her and the family.

Olive Ash Platter

Description}: I got this piece of wood from Clay at Choice Woods. He was having a sale on some wood that wasn't first rate before he moved to his new location. Wonderful wood, just didn't have the grain that some does. It is now the property of our nephew and his new wife. LOML gave it to them as a wedding present. Anyway, it is right at 12" wide and about 1 3/4" tall. Sanded to 400 dry and then wet sanded between coats of Seal-A-Cell and Arm-R-Seal. One of the few pieces that I had no problems with. It went smoothly from start to finish. Questions and comments are always welcome.

Collaborative Platter

Description}: Cherry burl piece that Hoss, Bama, and RevDoug worked on together one night. 9 1/2" wide, 1 1/2" high. Was getting a bit funky on the edge so we left the bottom more round than the inside. Finish is several coats of danish oil finish followed by the Beall buffing system. I wish the camera could pick up the way the wood is separating from itself. Looks a bit like fibers that have been pressed and glued together. Really cool piece. Now the fight to see who's going to keep it :D.

Black Locust Platter

Description}: This was a fun piece. Blank was the left over from the blank I sent off in the last exchange. It contains feather, quilting, spalting, bark inclusions, and other stuff I don't even know how to tell you about it. Really need platter. About 12" diameter, 1 1/2" tall. Finish is my standard (for now) thinned lacquer wash, tung oil finish, Beall buff. Questions/Comments welcome.

Spalted Maple Platter

Description}: Platter is about 9.5 inches in diameter and 1.5 inches tall. The thrid piece of mixed/saved finish. Wife was wanting a spalted piece. This blank was only thick enough for a platter. About 1/4" thick and weighs nearly nothing. Questions and comments welcome.

Walnut Plate #2

Description}: This is another 6x1 plate turned for the C&T. The blank was cut off the same burl block, thus the same kind of natural void appearing at the rim. I almost went ahead and embellished this one, but wifie wnated it to go with the other one for an arrangement. Both this one and #1 are finished with 2 coats of DO only.

Description}: This is a 6x1 plate of Black Walnut. I turned it as practice for the last challenge and trade. Decided real quick that the naturally occuring voids gave too much character to this piece to embelish the rim. Kind of reminds me of a nuclear accident survivor.

Description}: 9" Mahogany piece that almost didn't make it. Yes, that is light showing through the bottom. You can actually see the walls of the individual cells.
